200,000 Artifacts Beneath a Saskatchewan Highway

The Anomaly: 200,000 Specimens

Overview

Slope-remediation work in Moose Jaw’s Wakamow Valley exposed an unusually dense archaeological deposit at the Garratt Site (EcNj-7), producing nearly 200,000 catalogued specimens.

Most of the count fits intensive bison processing. The anomaly is the combination of bison scapula hoes, maize starch residue on pottery, and long-distance material links—raising the question: imported food, or northern-edge horticulture?
