The 16,000-Year-Old Mine Hidden Under a Wyoming Ghost Town

The abandoned town of Sunrise, Wyoming, looks like the remains of a much later industrial story.

For roughly a century, miners extracted iron ore from the surrounding hills. Rail lines, machinery, buildings, and reclamation work reshaped the landscape. Yet within that disturbed ground, archaeologists found evidence of another mining operation separated from the modern one by thousands of years.

At the Powars II site, Paleoindian communities dug into hematite-rich bedrock to obtain a material that produces a vivid red pigment.

The strongest published evidence places mining there nearly 13,000 years ago. That makes Powars II the oldest securely documented hematite quarry in the Americas—and possibly the oldest known mine of any kind in the Western Hemisphere.

But the episode’s 16,000-year headline requires a closer look. The number reflects reports of potentially older evidence from the wider Sunrise landscape. The directly dated quarry deposits at Powars II are younger and much more securely established.

That difference is the center of the investigation.

How the Ancient Mine Was Recognized

Powars II takes its name from Wayne Powars, an amateur archaeologist who had worked as a coach in Sunrise decades earlier.

Powars collected an unusually large number of Paleoindian stone points and tools near the former mining town. In the early 1980s, he showed part of the collection to archaeologists Dennis Stanford and George Frison.

The quantity was immediately unusual. A typical Clovis site may contain only a small number of diagnostic points. Powars had recovered many tens of points and other tools from one area.

The source remained uncertain until Powars led Frison to a railroad cut near Sunrise. Erosion from the adjacent slope had carried artifacts into view.

In 1986, modern mine-reclamation work threatened to alter the site further. Archaeologists arranged an emergency investigation, confirming that the artifacts were associated with red hematite deposits.

The site was important, but the early evidence had a problem: much of it had moved downhill or had been disturbed. Archaeologists could see that Paleoindian people had used the area, but proving an actual quarry required intact mining features and artifacts still in their original layers.

That evidence came from later excavations.

What the Controlled Excavations Found

Between 2017 and 2020, researchers excavated a trench through a previously undocumented quarry feature.

They identified a deeply buried layer resting beside hematite bedrock. Unlike the disturbed deposits above it, this layer preserved artifacts, quarry debris, bone, and mining features in place.

The bedrock itself carried physical evidence of extraction. Depressions and ledges had been cut into the hematite body, while large accumulations of discarded ore fragments formed quarry tailings on the slope.

Radiocarbon dates from well-preserved bone placed the earliest securely documented mining between approximately 10,900 and 10,600 BC.

Artifacts from this phase are associated with Clovis and Plainview cultural complexes. The assemblage includes stone tools, bone and antler implements, weapon components, and debris from producing and repairing equipment.

This was not simply a place where someone picked up exposed red stone.

People excavated the mineral, processed material, made or repaired tools, and carried out other activities beside the quarry. The density and variety of artifacts make Powars II one of the richest early Paleoindian assemblages documented in the Americas.

Why People Wanted Red Ocher

Red ocher is a broad archaeological term for iron-rich earth or stone used to produce pigment. At Powars II, the key material is hematite.

Some of the ore appears silver or dark before processing, but it leaves a deep red streak when rubbed or ground. Mixed with water, powdered hematite produces an especially vivid colour.

Red ocher appears at many early sites across the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains. Archaeologists have found it associated with graves, caches, campsites, hunting locations, and hide-working tools.

The material could have served practical purposes. Iron-rich pigment may be used in treating hides, colouring objects, protecting some organic materials, or creating abrasive mixtures.

It also carried symbolic importance in many societies.

At Powars II, however, archaeology cannot assign one single meaning to every piece of ocher. The mine’s repeated use, the placement of tools, and the deposition of objects suggest that obtaining the mineral involved more than casual collection. But the exact beliefs and ceremonies connected with the quarry remain unknown.

The evidence shows what people did physically. Interpreting what the colour meant to them requires greater caution.

A Mine Used by Different Paleoindian Communities

Powars II was not a one-time extraction site.

The earliest dated component contains Clovis and Plainview material. After an apparent interruption, people associated with the Hell Gap complex returned around 9650 BC.

They dug through earlier quarry tailings to reach the hematite bedrock below.

Their activity differed from the earlier phase. The Clovis and Plainview deposits include quarrying alongside weapon production, repair, and other tasks. The Hell Gap component appears more tightly focused on extracting hematite and placing objects in piles inside an abandoned quarry feature.

Other diagnostic artifacts found at Powars II indicate that the wider site was visited across a long span of Paleoindian time.

This repeated use matters because it suggests that knowledge of the mineral source survived across cultural and technological changes. People returned even though earlier mining had buried useful deposits beneath piles of discarded material.

The quarry was therefore not just discovered once. Its location remained known, remembered, or repeatedly identified for generations.

What the Artifacts Suggest About Distance

Stone tools recovered at Powars II were made from both local and nonlocal raw materials.

Some of those materials originated far beyond the immediate Sunrise landscape. The distribution points toward connections extending across much of the North American Great Plains.

Ocher resembling Sunrise material has also been reported at regional archaeological sites, including Hell Gap and the La Prele mammoth site.

This supports a reasonable inference: Powars II hematite moved beyond the quarry.

What archaeology cannot yet reconstruct is the exact system behind that movement. People may have travelled directly to Sunrise, exchanged material between neighbouring groups, carried it through repeated journeys, or combined several of these patterns.

Terms such as “trade network” can make the process sound more organized and uniform than the evidence allows.

The secure conclusion is narrower. The quarry attracted people who were connected to a much larger Plains world, and material from the Sunrise region did not necessarily remain at Sunrise.

Is the Mine Really 16,000 Years Old?

This is where the chronology must be separated into levels of confidence.

The peer-reviewed Powars II study provides direct evidence for quarrying beginning approximately 10,900–10,600 BC. The dates come from controlled excavations, intact stratigraphy, physical quarry features, and radiocarbon-dated remains.

That is the secure mining chronology.

The 16,000-year figure comes from reports about potentially older evidence in the broader Sunrise archaeological landscape, including artifacts sometimes described as Sunrise points.

An old artifact near a mineral source does not automatically prove that the mineral was being mined at the same time. Researchers must establish that the object came from an undisturbed layer, that the layer is securely dated, and that it is physically associated with quarrying activity.

Until evidence of that quality is published, “16,000-year-old mine” should be understood as an important claim under investigation—not as equivalent to the established Powars II quarry date.

This does not make the site less significant. A mine securely operating nearly 13,000 years ago is already extraordinary.

The distinction simply keeps a promising older possibility from outrunning the evidence.

Was It Really Hidden Under a Ghost Town?

Sunrise was established as an iron-mining community in the late 1800s. Industrial activity continued into the twentieth century before the town and mine were abandoned.

The ancient and modern mining stories occupy the same general landscape, but “hidden under a ghost town” is a compressed description.

Powars II lies on a slope affected by the industrial mine and townsite. Modern activity truncated parts of the archaeological deposit and nearly destroyed more of it. Other portions survived because dense quarry tailings helped stabilize the slope.

The irony remains real.

Modern miners were extracting iron from terrain that Paleoindian communities had already visited for another iron-rich material thousands of years earlier. The later industry almost erased evidence of the earlier one before archaeology recognized what was there.

But the ancient mine was not a sealed underground chamber waiting beneath abandoned houses. It was a quarry landscape partly exposed, partly buried, and partly disturbed.

What Powars II Changes

Powars II changes the image of early life in North America.

Paleoindian communities are often presented mainly as highly mobile hunters following large animals across open landscapes. The quarry shows another part of that world.

People possessed detailed knowledge of mineral resources. They invested labour in excavation. They returned to the same place over long periods. They produced and repaired tools there, carried nonlocal materials into the site, and moved ocher outward into a wider regional landscape.

The site also reveals how archaeology can be distorted by preservation and modern development.

Most of the quarry’s early record survived as stone, mineral debris, and fragments of bone. Organic containers, cords, wooden handles, clothing, and the social practices surrounding mining have largely disappeared.

Industrial work then disturbed the site again, mixing ancient deposits with the physical remains of a modern mining town.

What researchers recovered is therefore incomplete—but it is enough to establish a remarkable fact.

By approximately 10,900 BC, people at Sunrise were not merely collecting colour from the surface. They were operating a quarry, digging hematite from bedrock and returning to the source across generations.

The 16,000-year possibility remains open to further evidence.

The nearly 13,000-year mine does not.
